Healthy Snacks for Dogs to Improve Coat/Skin?
My two year old male Basset Hound, Toby, has somewhat rough feeling fur. It is mainly because his mother does, and she is from pure working lines. They are bred for thicker, tougher coats and skins to prevent injuries while on the job. But, his father came from champion show lines and had a soft, loose skin. Toby sort of got a mixture of both. He has very tough skin, that is very loose, but it is softer now that we feed Purina (I know; blah blah blah, all the fillers, bad ingredients, etc. but my dogs do best on this food and actually refuse to eat anything like Innova; my grandfather feeds his Basset Innova and I stayed with him for two weeks with my dog and he would NOT go near it!).
But I was wondering.. What are some healthy, homemade snacks that I could make to improve his skin and coat? I want it to be soft, shiny, and healthy looking. I heard that cooked eggs were healthy for them, but I don’t want them eating raw eggs because of salmonella(sp?).
You could just try using fish oil capsules-cut them open and put the oil on his food. They are excellent for a dogs skin and fur coat.
well chicken might help and get a good shampoo
For the coat, I add fish oil (there are several to choose from: salmon, sardine/anchovy, etc.) and some kelp to my dogs’ food each day.
Raw eggs won’t give your dog salmonella. Heck, they won’t give you salmonella if you eat them either! Approximately only 1:30,000 eggs is contaminated, that’s a 0.003% risk. With average consumption, you may come across a contaminated egg once every 42 years. (And if your dog is healthy, salmonella isn’t a big deal for them anyway. After all, they can eat things like raw chicken and road kill, their digestive systems are meant for handling that.)
