Dermal Fillers Demystified
Dermal fillers, cosmetic injections designed to replace natural skin elastins lost over time, are gaining popularity among an aging population looking to maintain its youthful appearance without the invasiveness of plastic surgery.
Several classes of dermal fillers are approved for use in the United States, predominately collagen-based fillers marketed under brand names like Cosmoderm and Cosmoplast, and hyaluronic-acid fillers sold under names including Restylane and Hylaform. A newer dermal filler called Radiesse, a phosphorus and calcium blend, is also gaining widespread use. All are derivatives of one or more of the natural proteins that give youthful skin its firmness, elasticity and ability to retain moisture.
Dermal fillers are used primarily to restore volume and shape to sagging facial skin and are often used in combination with Botox, another type of injection which acts as a muscle relaxant. Collagen and hyaluronic-acid fillers add volume to the dermis, or middle layer of skin, while Radiesse, also known as hydroxyl apatite, is injected into a deeper skin layer and stimulates the production of new collagen.
Dermal fillers are routinely used to minimize the appearance of smile and frown lines and smooth wrinkled skin under the eyes, along the jawline and in the forehead. Hydroxyl apatite also is used for lip augmentation.
The injections can cost anywhere from several hundred to several thousand dollars per treatment, depending upon the areas being treated and the amount of filler required. The effects of collagen-based fillers typically last between three and six months, while hyaluronic acid can last up to a year. Radiesse degrades within a few months, but generates new collagen for roughly 15 months, although some patients have reported effects lasting more than three years.
Another procedure, lipotransfer, involves the removal of fat from one part of the body for injection into another. Lipotransfer is popular among some patients because it eliminates the risk of allergic reaction, although there is no reliable data to suggest how long the effects of fat-filler injections last. Patients have reported widely disparate results ranging from a few months to a few years.
Dermal-filler procedures are typically performed in a doctor’s office and require little or no recovery time. Some patients experience allergic reactions and other side effects including bruising, swelling and redness that typically subside after a few days.
